History

The Stone Church at Plano was the first church built by the Reorganization.

It served as headquarters of Community of Christ (then the RLDS Church) from 1866 to 1881, and was the location of 14 General Conferences of the Church.

Every President of the Church, except Joseph Smith Jr., have preached from its pulpit.

The Church Seal was created at Plano Stone Church during the April 1874 General Conference.

What began as a legal symbol for official church documents has evolved into Community of Christ’s iconic logo. It featured familiar symbols like the lion, lamb, and child, but also a palm tree—symbolizing the church’s growth in French Polynesia. The word “PEACE” was included in the original seal, signaling the focus of the Church and its message.

Like the Kirtland Temple, the congregational building is a Greek Revival structure. It is built of sandstone. An inscription over the front entrance reads:

1868

HOLINESS

TO THE LORD

with a backwards “N” in Holiness
